Handcrafted re-stackable Great Lakes stone cairn made from Lake Michigan and Lake Superior beach stones—natural garden art for patios, meditation spaces, and nature-inspired landscapes.
Bring the natural beauty of the Great Lakes into your garden or outdoor space with this handcrafted re-stackable stone cairn. Made from naturally tumbled Lake Michigan and Lake Superior beach stones, this one-of-a-kind sculpture combines organic shapes, earthy colors, and the quiet simplicity of balanced stone.
Several of the stones feature the distinctive colors found in Jacobsville sandstone, with light golden and burgundy tones appearing in natural bands and markings. Like all of the stones in this cairn, their colors and patterns were created by nature rather than added by hand.
Each stone has been shaped by waves, sand, weather, and time along Great Lakes shorelines. Over the years, I've collected countless stones from beaches throughout Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and along Lake Superior's North Shore. Back in my workshop, I select individual stones based on their shape, color, texture, and ability to work together as a balanced sculpture.
This cairn is fully re-stackable rather than permanently bonded. It is shown in a carefully balanced arrangement, but the stones can be taken apart and rebuilt in your own configuration. Numbered stones, photographs, and stacking tips are included to make reconstructing the original arrangement easier.
The listing photographs show the cairn both dry and lightly wetted. Water brings out deeper colors, patterns, and details that can be easy to miss when the stones are dry.
Cairns have long been used as markers of paths, places, remembrance, and guidance. Today, their simple forms work beautifully in gardens, meditation spaces, patios, cottage settings, and other places where a natural focal point adds a sense of calm.
A thoughtful gift for gardeners, hikers, paddlers, Great Lakes enthusiasts, nature lovers, or anyone with a special connection to Michigan or the Great Lakes.
