This miniature stone cairn combines ten naturally beach-smoothed Lake Michigan stones with a piece of Lake Michigan beach glass and a genuine Petoskey stone as its topstone. Each piece was collected from beautiful beaches along Lake Michigan's shoreline and carefully selected to create this one-of-a-kind sculpture.
The Petoskey stone makes this little cairn especially meaningful as a reminder of Michigan. Combined with the beach glass and naturally shaped stones, it brings together several pieces of the Great Lakes shoreline in a sculpture that is small enough to display almost anywhere.
I collect thousands of stones each year from beaches throughout Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and beyond. Back in my workshop, I sort through them looking for combinations of color, shape, texture, and balance that work together. Sometimes the right combination comes together quickly. Other times, I may explore hundreds of different possibilities before finding the group that feels right.
That process is what makes each cairn one of a kind.
Cairns have long been used as trail markers, landmarks, memorials, and symbols of guidance and remembrance. Today, they can also serve as quiet reminders of a special place, a meaningful journey, or a connection to nature.
