One of the distinctive features of this cairn is its collection of beautiful Lake Superior sandstones. Their natural colors, patterns, and textures add a rich variety of color to the sculpture. Combined with stones from both Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, they create an especially colorful and visually interesting balance of shapes, textures, and tones.
Every stone has been naturally shaped by waves, sand, and time. I personally collect thousands of stones each year from beaches throughout Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and beyond. Back in my workshop, I sort through them looking for combinations that work together in color, shape, texture, and balance.
Sometimes a cairn comes together from only a few possibilities. Other times, hundreds of combinations may be explored before the right stones find their places.
That process makes every cairn one of a kind.
Re-Stackable Garden Sculpture
This cairn is completely unbonded, allowing you to disassemble and rebuild it whenever you wish. It is shown in one of its more stable formations, but you can experiment with other arrangements as you become familiar with the natural balance of the stones.
Top-down photographs of the stones laid out before assembly are included, along with stacking tips to help you recreate the original arrangement.
Because this is a re-stackable sculpture, it is an interactive piece rather than permanent outdoor statuary. This cairn is shown in a very stable form, but sometimes very severe weather or wildlife can occasionally shift a stone. Rebuilding it is part of the experience and can become a quiet, meditative part of spending time in your garden.
The cairn is photographed both wet and dry to show how dramatically the natural colors and patterns of the stones can change.
