This colorful cairn was created from authentic Lake Superior beach stones, each naturally shaped, rounded, and smoothed by waves, sand, and time over thousands of years. The stones have their own natural colors, patterns, textures, and character that cannot be reproduced in manufactured stone.
I collect thousands of stones each year from beaches throughout Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and beyond. Different parts of Lake Superior reveal remarkably different stones, and back in my workshop I carefully select combinations that work together in shape, color, texture, and balance.
Some cairns come together after only a few possibilities. Others require exploring hundreds of combinations before the right stones finally find their places.
That process makes every finished cairn completely unique.
This piece is part of my ongoing series of handcrafted Great Lakes stone sculptures. It is permanently bonded for stability and recommended for indoor display.
