Bring home the beauty of the Great Lakes with this large re-stackable garden stone cairn handcrafted from 15 authentic Lake Michigan and Lake Superior beach stones. A one-of-a-kind interactive sculpture featuring remarkable Michigan geology and timeless natural artistry.
Some sculptures are built.
Others are discovered.
This one began with thousands of miles of shoreline.
Every year my wife and I spend countless hours exploring the beaches of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, collecting thousands of naturally shaped stones. Back in my workshop, I patiently sort through hundreds of possible combinations until the right balance, colors, and character quietly reveal themselves. Every finished cairn is truly one of a kind.
This robust re-stackable sculpture is handcrafted from 15 authentic Lake Michigan and Lake Superior beach stones collected from shorelines across Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Together they tell the story of two extraordinary Great Lakes, bringing millions of years of geology into a single sculpture.
Standing approximately 14 inches tall, this cairn is built from substantial stones whose natural weight contributes to its impressive stability. It is shown here in one of its most balanced arrangements and performs well under typical outdoor conditions. Like traditional stone cairns found along trails and shorelines, an occasional shift from wind, wildlife, or curious hands is simply part of its story—and rebuilding it becomes part of the experience.
Among the many distinctive stones are:
• Serpentinized peridotite collected from the famous Black Rocks near Marquette, Michigan
• Beautiful spotted Jacobsville sandstone
• Keweenaw basalt with striking mineral inclusions
• A stone displaying vivid epidote veining
• A beautiful banded gneiss top stone
These remarkable Lake Michigan and Lake Superior stones make this cairn every bit as fascinating up close as it is from across the garden.
Included with your cairn:
• Fifteen authentic Lake Michigan and Lake Superior beach stones
• Numbered stones for easy rebuilding
• Top-down reference photographs of the original arrangement
• Stacking tips to help you discover each stone's natural balance
• A 2" × 3" parchment-style informational card explaining the history and symbolism of stone cairns
Dimensions:
Height: Approximately 14"
Width: Approximately 12"
Depth: Approximately 11"
Suitable for indoor or outdoor display.
Whether displayed as a striking garden focal point, a peaceful patio sculpture, or an interactive centerpiece in a great room or meditation space, this one-of-a-kind cairn offers a lasting connection to the beauty, history, and spirit of Michigan's Great Lakes.
Every beach stone has a shoreline.
Every cairn has a story.
